    Hi there!

I recently gave IELTS in January 2023 and scored an 8.5 band. I had 9 on my Reading and Speaking. 8 on Listening, and 7 on Speaking. I never took any coaching or watched videos on tips and tricks. I just did the basic things right.

Reading: I read a book and tons of articles. I knew that if I could comprehend the information in an article and explain the essence of the article correctly, I would perform just fine on the test. I read this book called Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell – underlined important information, made notes – and read articles on Bloomberg, New Yorker, etc. I read carefully and moved forward after completely understanding what the writer was trying to say.

Writing: I spent an hour every day practicing (I wrote about whatever I could think about – story, non-fiction essay, my feelings), and after each writing section, I used tools like Grammarly to fix my grammar and sentence structure. I also got feedback from my friends, which really helped.

Listening: I watched movies on Netflix with subtitles and listened to podcasts on Spotify. I figured that if I could understand Joe Rogan’s talk about the pyramids or a dialogue between two actors, I would do well on the listening part.

Speaking: I practiced with my friends and made it a rule to only reply in English. I practiced my introduction, a commentary on a topic – pretty much the basic stuff.

    Important:
I did this with consistency and a lot of discipline. I read, wrote, listened, and spoke daily without breaking my streak.

    Hope this helps.
